Usually, the process of getting a full driver’s license in Ontario takes about 20 months to finish. The following steps will help you gain a driver’s license in Ontario.

Your Ontario driver’s license lists your name, address, date of birth, photo and signature on a small blue plastic card. The information also includes an expiry date, letting you know by when you must renew your license.

How can you become a driver in Ontario?

What are the G1, G2 and G levels?

The Ontario graduated licensing program in Ontario has three stages: G1, G2, and the full G license. To gain a full G license, every driver must complete the G1 and G2 stages within five years. Otherwise, you must start over. The following gives a basic overview of the different stages:

The Graduated Driver’s Licensing System in Ontario (GDL)

Ontario’s graduated licensing system is designed to help prepare drivers for the road through a three-level system, with special restrictions at each stage of the process. You can avoid inadvertently breaking driving laws if you understand this process.

As previously mentioned, the time limit for completing all three stages of the licensing process is five years. After that time, you must begin again if you have not yet completed all three stages. It all begins with the G1 license.

The G1 Licence

In Ontario, the G1 licence is equivalent to a learner’s permit in other provinces. You can receive this permit if you pass a vision exam (with prescription eyewear if necessary) and successfully complete a written test on the rules of the road.

The first two license levels include various restrictions on the drivers. G1 license restrictions include:

  • Always having an accompanying passenger who has been fully licensed for at least four years, with a blood alcohol level of under .05. An accompanying passenger who is 21 or under cannot drink any alcohol.
  • You cannot have any alcohol in your system.
  • All passengers must wear seatbelts and you cannot have more passengers than the number of functioning seatbelts.
  • Driving between midnight and 5 a.m. is not allowed.
  • Driving on 400-series highways or expressways is not allowed.

Before moving from the G1 license to the G2 phase of licensing, you will need to pass a road test of basic skills. This test comes after twelve months of driving practice, which can be shortened to eight if you successfully complete a MTO approved driving course (Trubicars) that teaches students how to operate a vehicle safely in all situations.

The G2 Probationary License

Once you have passed the first road test, you are eligible to continue to the G2 stage. This phase includes greater freedoms than at the G1 stage. With the G2 license, you are no longer required to have a fully licensed driver in the passenger’s seat, and the prohibitions against driving on highways or driving at night no longer apply. The restrictions that still apply to G2 drivers are:

  • You must not drink any alcohol; your blood alcohol level must be zero.
  • The number of passengers must never exceed the number of seatbelts.
  • Drivers under the age of 19, in their first six months of holding a G2 license, may not carry more than one non-family member between midnight and 5 a.m. without a fully licensed driver in the passenger seat.
  • After 12 months or more with the G2 license, you will be eligible to take the final road test for your full G license.

The Full G License

A successful second road test will mean that you are eligible for a full G license, with no restrictions. Most people take about two years to complete the process. The second road test will help you prepare for the types of skills you will need on the road. Some of these skills include handling a vehicle smoothly on the road, as well as understanding traffic flow, merging and other essential tasks.

The full license removes restrictions from drivers, other than the ones that relate to the basics of safe driving. Driving is complicated, and people make mistakes or even sometimes deliberately ignore the rules. Often, penalties come with these actions. While drivers cannot be sent back through the graduated system, they can still have their license suspended in the more serious cases of a breach of the rules. As elsewhere, drivers in Ontario should always follow the rules of the road. Driving safely can prevent collisions and help others on the road get to their destinations without problems.

How do I schedule a G1 written (knowledge) test in Ontario?

The first step in learning to drive is to complete an exam that examines your knowledge of traffic laws in Ontario. The G1 written test, or driver’s knowledge test, is a prerequisite for receiving the learner’s permit to allow you to begin practicing your driving skills. Once you have passed this test, you can begin to practice driving with a licensed and experienced driving instructor.

Student drivers must complete the G1 written test before taking the road test or receiving a license. You must purchase the G1 license package for the knowledge test, G2 road test and five-year license. The written test itself, which is available in 25 languages in addition to English, consists of multiple choice questions. If your language is not included in the list, you can choose one of the available languages or pay for an interpreter to translate the questions for you. If you fail the test the first time, you can retake it as many times as necessary for you to pass, as long as you are willing to pay the test fee each time. If possible, book your test far enough in advance to give yourself a good chance to study and prepare for the questions you will encounter on the test.

Trubicars offer exam like practice questions to help you prepare for your G1 test.

How to schedule your G1 written test

To book your written driver’s knowledge test, you can either make a reservation online or you can visit a licensing centre in your area. The online booking option involves filling out a form with all of the necessary information. If anything changes after you have made the online booking, you can still make changes, including cancelling or rescheduling your test date. Access to the website is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and you can make payments with credit or debit cards up to two days before the date of your scheduled test.

What do you need before you book your road test?

In order to book your appointment through the website, you will need a valid e-mail address, valid driver’s license number with its expiration date and a valid credit or debit card. Attending a MTO driving school (course provider) allows you to book a test after having your learner’s permit for 8 months. Before you schedule this appointment, be sure that the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario has submitted your training results.

If you have to cancel an appointment for any reason, avoid problems with the online booking system, wait 24 hours to reschedule your road test. After cancelling your road test on the system three or more times, you will no longer be able to use the online form but instead will have to visit a local testing centre. Also, be sure to remove any online filters that would prevent you from receiving important e-mails or notifications from the booking system. Be sure to use an up-to-date web browser that can receive pop-up windows. That way, you will be able to print out your appointment confirmation and receipt for your payment.

Benefits of Using the Online System

For anyone familiar with computers, the online booking system is easy and takes only minutes to complete. On the web page, you can choose from a list of available test dates and times at one of the locations given on the site. Once you have made your choice, the system will give a printable summary of payment and test date information. Another confirmation will go to the e-mail address that you have given. With these guidelines, you should have little trouble with booking your driver’s knowledge test.

What is the cost for a G1 test?

The fee for the G1 test is $158.25. This amount covers your first attempt at the written exam, as well as your G2 driving test. If you fail the written test the first time, you will need to pay an additional $15.75 to retake the test.

What should I do if I fail my G1 test?

Time permitting, you can retake the test on the same day for a fee of $15.75, or you can return on another day to try again. Once you pass, you will walk out with your G1 license.

What is G1 road test?

You will need to take two road tests as a beginning driver. You can take the first, the G1 road test, after 12 months with a G1 license. Basic driving skills, such as turning right or left, stopping or parking are all part of the G1 road test. After passing the test, you will receive your G2 license.

What is Ontario’s Graduated Licensing System?

Since 1994, Ontario has had a three-tier graduated licensing system for new drivers allowing them a controlled setting for learning, normally over a period of two to five years. Levels G1 and G2 lead to the full G license, which is the full license with no restrictions. For G1 and G2 drivers, restrictions include a blood alcohol level of zero (and zero THC) at all times, as well as restrictions on factors such as the roads, time of day and number of passengers that are allowed.

Going through a graduated licensing program to learn in a controlled environment is required for every new driver in Ontario, whether young or older. Drivers with foreign experience may also be required to go through this program if they are unable to prove that they have the qualifications.

The Basics of Graduated Licensing

  1. G1 license (learner’s) – Minimum time period spent in G1: 12 months; for students enrolled in an approved driving course: 8 months
  2. G2 license (probationary) – Minimum time in G2: 12 months
  3. G license (full license) – Maximum time to get full G license: 5 years

Regulations & Restrictions for the G1 License:

  • For the G1 permit, you must be at least 16 years old and pass a test on the rules of the road
  • Your blood alcohol and THC levels must be zero.
  • Seatbelts are required for all occupants.
  • You must have an accompanying driver with at least four years’ experience.
  • You are not allowed to drive on certain roads, including 400-series highways.
  • Driving between midnight and 5 a.m. is not allowed.
  • You are not allowed to take the G2 test until you have had your G1 license for 12 months.
  • Successfully completing an approved driving course allows you to take your G2 test after 8 months.

Regulations & Restrictions for the G2 License:

  • Minimum age of 16 and a successful driving test.
  • Your blood alcohol and THC levels must be zero.
  • Seatbelts are required for the driver and all passengers.
  • You are not required to have an accompanying driver.
  • No additional restrictions apply to drivers age 20 or older, or those who are accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least 4 years’ driving experience.
  • Unaccompanied drivers age 19 or under have these restrictions with the G2 license:
    • For the first 6 months, you may not transport more than one other person aged 19 or under between midnight and 5 a.m.
    • For the remainder of the year, you may carry up to 3 other people aged 19 or under between midnight and 5am.
  • You must not take the test for your full G license until you have had your G2 license for 12 months.

General Restrictions:

  • You have 5 years from the moment you pass your G1 test to get your full G license or you will have to begin the process again.
  • All drivers under the age of 22, regardless of license level, must maintain a blood alcohol and THC level of zero.

Drivers with foreign road experience:

  • Drivers may be allowed to bypass the graduated licensing program with proof of at least 24 months of foreign driving experience in the last 3 years, instead proceeding directly to the driving test to gain their full G license.
  • Drivers may still be allowed to bypass parts of the graduated licensing program, even with less than 24 months of foreign driving experience.

Can you fail your G1 test in Ontario more than once?

Ontario has no limit on the number of times you can try. For example, if you fail you test, you can take it but keep in mind you have to pay the fee again for the test.

Can I book my G1 test online in Ontario?

If you have taken and passed an MTO approved BDE course, you will be eligible to book your road test online 8 months after receiving your G1. You can pay the fee online with a credit card when you schedule your test.

Can I already buy a car with G1 licence?

As a G1 driver, you are allowed to buy a car, but you will likely need your G2 licence to be able to insure it for driving. The name of the registered owner is always on an insurance policy, but the primary driver of the vehicle must be someone who has a valid G2 or G licence.

Can G1 drivers get demerit points?

If you are convicted of breaking certain driving laws, you will receive demerit points on your license. Depending on whether you are a novice or a fully licensed driver, you will be allowed to accumulate a different number of demerit points before receiving a penalty. For a G1 or G2 driver in Ontario, collecting six to eight demerit points could result in a license suspension. If that happens, you will have to attend a meeting to explain your reasons for objecting to the suspension. And at nine demerit points, you will receive a 60-day license suspension.

The purpose behind the restrictions and conditions on G1 licenses is to ensure that learners have a safe environment for enhancing their skills and gaining driving experience. However, a conviction for breaking the rules under the graduated licensing system brings serious consequences under Ontario’s escalating penalties program: the first conviction brings a license suspension of 30 days; a second conviction brings a suspension of 90 days; a third conviction means the loss of the novice license. At that stage, you would have to start again from the beginning with the G1 test.

Besides the trouble of starting again, you would lose any time that you had earned from taking a driving course, and discounts credited to your account and any fees that you had already paid.

Remember, driving a vehicle is a privilege, not a right. Driving is a life-long learning process.

How long does a G1 license last?

Five years.

You are allowed to stay at the G1 level for five years before progressing to the next license level. If you have not progressed to the next level by then, you must either take and pass the G2 road test or start over again with the G1 written test.

Can a G1 license holder drive alone?

No. G1 Drivers Can’t Drive Alone. Anyone holding a G1 license who gets behind the wheel must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver sitting in the passenger seat. No one else can be in that position or sit between them. The purpose of this requirement is to reduce distractions and to give the licensed driver a clear view of the novice driver.

There are a few important points about who the licensed driver can (and must) be. The accompanying driver must have been fully licensed for at least four years – in Ontario, that means having a minimum of a G2 license. If the driver is from another province, they must hold the equivalent full license in their province rather than being at any earlier stage of a graduated licensing program, and they must have held it for at least 4 years.

Any fully licensed driver must not exceed the legal blood alcohol limit for driving. In Ontario that limit is .05%. The reason is so that the accompanying driver in the passenger seat can take over for the driver if necessary. In addition, G1 drivers can have other passengers in the back seat, but not more than the number of available seatbelts.

Where and when G1 drivers are allowed to drive?

G1 drivers are restricted from using certain roads, and also the time of day when they can be on the road.

Drivers with a G1 license are allowed to drive on any roads except 400-series highways or high-speed expressways. The only exception to this rule is when a licensed driving instructor is in the vehicle. In that case, The G1 driver can get the necessary highway driving experience for passing to the next licensing level.

In addition, G1 drivers are restricted from driving at certain times. Legally, G1 drivers are not allowed to be behind the wheel between midnight and 5 a.m., when a fully licensed driver must take over the task of driving.

G1 drivers and alcohol

A G1 driver, regardless of age, must have a blood alcohol level of zero at all times, without exception. Although Ontario’s legal limit for other drivers is a blood alcohol level of .05%, this rule applies only to drivers who have already passed beyond the graduated licensing system.

This rule is very strictly enforced for G1 drivers, regardless of age. For a G1 driver, being caught with any level of alcohol in the blood will result in a license suspension. The best choice is to stay completely sober, even at the G2 level, for the safety of everyone on the road.

Is the G1 test difficult to pass?

Passing the G1 test can be easy if you practice Trubicars G1 practice tests. Practice all the G1 quizzes and remember what it says about the rules of the road and the meanings of signs. Practicing with the G1 sample questions and driving scenarios will also help you understand more fully. Remember that when you come to write the test, you need a minimum score of 16 for each section for a passing grade.

Can you skip questions on the G1 test?

You can skip questions, but you should try to go back to complete them. The test consists of only 40 questions, 20 signs and 20 rules, and you need to get at least 16 right in each section. When you are done, hand in your piece of paper and the testers will tell you if you passed or not.

Is the G1 test available at Service Ontario?

Be sure to consult a list of all the test centres in the province of Ontario for the G1 knowledge test. This exam is offered at all DriveTest locations. The pen and paper version of the test is available at any Service Ontario centre, but the online version is also available at some locations.

No matter where you live in Ontario, you can search to find the Ontario G1 test location that is most convenient for you.

You do not need an appointment to take the G1 test.

The knowledge tests are administered on a “first come — first served” basis. Be sure to arrive at the test centre no later than one hour before the centre closes to allow time for the document check and testing procedures.

The G1 test includes consists of two sections, one on traffic signs and the other on the rules of the road. You can pass the test even with four errors in each section. However, making just one mistake in the first section and five in the second will result in a failure. You can learn the results within minutes of submitting your test to the agent. If you fail the test the first time, you can still pay the fee and take the test again on the same day if you wish, or you can wait for another day.

What happens if you are caught driving without an accompanying driver on a G1 license?

If you are stopped by the police while driving unaccompanied with your G1, your license will be suspended for 30 days and will have to pay a fine of about $110. You will not receive any demerit points as the idea behind demerit points is that accumulating enough of them results in a license suspension.

Do you need insurance for G1?

G1 drivers do not need separate insurance, since their auto insurance will typically be covered by one of their parents or caregivers. Alternately, if a G1 license holder is practicing in another car (for example, with an instructor at a driving school), the car owner will provide the insurance coverage for that vehicle.

How can I get to G after G1?

Drivers typically spend 12 months each on the G1 license and G2 license before becoming eligible to apply to take the G road test.

What restrictions apply to G license holders?

G license holders who are 21 years old or younger must have a zero-blood alcohol level while driving. The same applies to cannabis.

Can I fast track the waiting period between getting my G2 and taking the G test?

No. Unlike the G2 test which can be taken early with the help of a driver’s training course, no such conditions apply to the G test. You must wait the full 12 months between G2 and applying to take your G test. That way, you will have sufficient time to practice freeway driving and to build the experience necessary for your G test.

Do insurance rates decrease with the G licence?

Fully licensed drivers are expected to have an advanced level of driving knowledge and experience on the road, meaning that you should be at a lower risk of getting into an accident than you were earlier. If you are both collision-free and ticket-free, insurance rates at the G level are typically cheaper than with the G2 license.

Step by step guide to passing G1, G2 and G tests in Ontario

Step 1 – Passing the G1 test

If you are 16 years old or more, are someone who has not had a driver’s license in the past 3 years for some reason or are a newcomer to Canada without proof of sufficient foreign driving experience, you will be required to participate in Ontario’s graduated licensing program if you want to become a fully licensed driver. The graduated licensing program is designed to last 20 months and a maximum of 5 years.

The first stage of this program of driver licensing is called G1. To get to this stage requires paying a fee of $159.75, passing a vision test, and successfully writing a test showing your knowledge of basic rules of the road. The G1 test consists of two sections. To pass the test, you must achieve at least 16/20 (80%) on each section. There is no road test at this point.

The Driver’s Handbook contains all of the information you need for the G1 test. Be sure to study this useful book carefully. In addition, check online for Trubicars practice tests and complete as many of these as possible.

Prebooking is not necessary for the G1 test. All you need to do is to go to any DriveTest centre at least one hour before it closes and ask to write the test. To register for the test, you will have to show valid ID giving your full name, signature, a picture and your date of birth. Acceptable ID includes:

  • A valid passport (Canadian or any other)
  • A valid citizenship card
  • A valid immigration document, whether permanent or temporary

In circumstances where a single document is insufficient, you may be required to show a second document to prove your identity. For example, the primary document may include only your maiden name or have no signature included on it. In these cases, you could use a marriage certificate could prove your new name, or you could use a student card or health card to satisfy the signature requirement if there is none on your primary ID.

In some cases, applicants complete the knowledge test with paper and pencil, while in other cases a computer at the testing facility may be available for the test. Unless the testing facility is busy, you should get your results very quickly. If you pass, you can get your G1 license immediately. If you fail and time permits, you can take the test again the same day for a fee of only $15.75.

Step 2 – Learning through a MTO approved driving course (Trubicars)

Formal driver’s education courses are not currently legally required, but it is a good idea to take a few of them. Here are at least three good reasons for enrolling:

  1. You can get your full license four months sooner than you otherwise could;
  2. You will be better prepared for the G2 test; and
  3. You or your parents will save money on insurance.

Although a good driver’s education course can cost between $500 to $1000, the cost savings on insurance could be double that amount or more in the first few years. Although you are free to choose, taking a MTO approved driver training course such as Trubicars is the best option if your goal is to get your full license quickly and then to pay as little on insurance as possible.

Even if the savings in money and time fail to convince you, the confidence you can gain on the road from the defensive driving principles you will learn could more than compensate for the cost, besides possibly even saving your life.

Trubicars curriculum is the first ministry approved eLearning curriculum and trusted by many driving schools in Ontario. It is the most widely used MTO approved curriculum in Ontario.

Step 3 – Supervision in driving with your G1

It would be easy to assume that the third step in the graduated licensing process would be to take the G2 driving test. However, the next step is to take 8 to 12 months with the G1 license to gain valuable experience under the supervision of an experienced driver. Taking advantage of this time is important. Although you are not required to complete a specific number of driving hours during these months, it is logical to assume that 50 or 100 hours of practice over that time will be much more valuable for turning you into a competent and confident driver than 10 half-hour drives would be.

Remember the restrictions that come with a G1 license:

  • You must drive together with another driver with at least 4 years of experience at the fully licensed level.
  • Your accompanying driver
    • must sit in the front passenger seat.
    • must have a blood alcohol and THC level of zero at age 21 or under
    • must have a blood alcohol level of under 0.05% at age 22 or older
  • You must have blood alcohol and THC levels of zero.
  • Seatbelts are required for every person in the car.
  • Driving on 400-series highways is not allowed.
  • Driving between midnight and 5 a.m. is not allowed.

Step 4 – Completing the G2 driving test

After at least 12 months of practice with the G1 license (or 8 months with official driver training), you are eligible to take a road test for your G2 license. Although this will be the first official driving test for most people, the instructors at MTO approved driver training course can give students many useful tips for what to anticipate on the test.

Unlike the G1 test, you must book ahead for your G2 test online at https://www.drivetest.ca or by phone at 647-776-0331 (GTA) or 1-888-570-6110. To make the booking, you will need your driver’s license number, as well as your preferred test dates and locations. The date of your test will be within a maximum of 42 days from when you call, or sooner.

The fee for the road test is $53.75. To be sure that you have enough time, be at the testing facility at least 10 minutes before you are scheduled to begin the test.

It is best to bring a car, whether it is your own or your parents’ vehicle, although some driving schools allow students to use one of theirs. The car that you bring must have registration, up-to-date insurance and license plates. In addition, it should be in good working order with all of its signal lights and other features functioning well. You should be familiar with how to adjust the seat and mirrors and be able to work all the controls, including all lights and signals.

The test examines your basic driving skills and should take about 20 minutes. Some of the skills include:

  • Starting
  • Backing
  • Driving along
  • Intersections / Railway road crossing
  • Turns
  • Parking
  • Stop, Park and Start on grade

The G2 test does not include highway driving but will be conducted on local roads. You will receive your results immediately. If you pass, your license can be upgraded to a G2 level immediately. If you fail, you can book another test and your examiner will give you feedback on what mistakes you made. However, you will have to pay another road test fee of $53.75.

Step 5 – Passing your G driving test

Once you complete twelve months with your G2 license, you’ll be eligible to take your G test. This is the final driving test. Passing this test will give you a full, unrestricted G license. You must schedule your G test beforehand, just as you did with your G2 test. You can book it online at https://www.drivetest.ca. The cost of the road test is $91.25. You should arrive at least 10 minutes early.

You will need a car for your test, together with its registration, license plates and up-to-date insurance. The car must be in good working order. An examiner who feels that the car is unsafe may cancel your test and require you to reschedule your appointment. If you are unfamiliar with the features and controls of the car, be sure to take some time to learn how the car works.

You will be required to pass a vision test and sign a “Declaration of Highway Driving Experience” before you can take the test.

Normally, the test lasts 30 to 40 minutes. It will deal with some of the same skills as in the G2 test, as well as more advanced driving techniques, such as:

  • Left and right turns
  • Lane changes (business / expressway)
  • Stop intersections
  • Through intersections
  • Expressway
  • Roadside stop
  • Three-point turn
  • Parallel park

Your examiner will tell you at the end of the test if you passed. If you have succeeded, you are eligible to get a temporary G license right away. Keep this license until you receive your permanent license through the mail. If you have not managed to pass, you can schedule another test. Either way, the examiner will likely provide feedback on the mistakes that you made. You should take note of these critiques, especially if you failed. If you need to schedule a second test, you will have to pay the $91.25 test fee again.
