According to the Highway Traffic Act, drivers must signal at every direction change where other traffic may be affected by the movement.

Normally, it is best to keep both hands on the wheel and to use the vehicle’s electric turn signals rather than hand signals. In some cases, however, it may be difficult for drivers coming up from behind to see an electric signal, such as
when a driver is preparing to leave a parking spot. In that case, a hand signal is a better way to provide the information that other drivers need.

Traffic conditions at the time will determine when the driver should discontinue the hand signal. Drivers should also remember that signals notify other road users of the driver’s intentions but are not connected with the right-of-way on the
road. The signaller should be sure to wait until it is safe before following through on any intention.
