Improper choice of lane / straddles lanes / unmarked roadway
- According to the MTO Handbook and the Highway Traffic Act, the right lane of a roadway is for travelling, while the left lane is for passing and turning left. The rules are in place to ensure a better and safer flow of traffic. Therefore, if you travel in the left lane of a multi-lane road for too long you would receive a minor mark. If you turn left on a G1 Exit Test (G2 Test), and you find yourself in the left lane, a Drivetest Examiner would expect you to make a safe lane change into the right lane.
- You also need to stay centered in your lane and not wander into another lane. This would be dangerous as you could sideswipe another vehicle causing the vehicles to lose control. This is known as “lane discipline”. You can normally stay centered and not wander by looking far ahead, in the direction you wish to travel. Wandering could be marked as a minor mistake or could lead to a failure if you almost cause a collision or dangerous condition.
- On an unmarked roadway, you must always drive towards the right side of the road. This is important as another vehicle could be coming in the opposite direction.
