Fails to observe – uses mirror only

Before you leave your parking spot, it is important to check 360 degrees around your vehicle. This involves not just looking in your mirrors but looking left and right to make sure nothing is in your blind-spots.  A blind-spot is an area on either side of the car not visible in your mirrors or your peripheral (side) vision. If equipped, quickly check your back-up camera to ensure nothing is directly behind your car. Always look before you put the car in motion. It does you no good to hit something and then see it

While firmly holding the steering wheel, put the gear selector in reverse and turn sideways in your seat to look over your shoulder in the direction you are moving.

If you are reversing straight back or to the right, turn your body and head to the right and look back over your right shoulder.

Your side and rear-view mirrors do not show enough of where you are reversing.

If you are reversing to the left, turn your body and head to the left and look over your left shoulder .
Always check the opposite shoulder as well.

If you are turning as you reverse, check that the front end of your vehicle does not hit anything.
